Polluted Rivers

                                                 Polluted Rivers
The name of one river that is polluted is the Selwyn River in Canterbury.  It is polluted from Nitrogen from the farms around it. To clean up the river the farmers are being told to reduce nitrogen on the farms.

The Grey River in Greymouth is also sometimes polluted.  The problem is raw sewage is discharged into the Grey River after lots of rain.  They are working on fixing the sewage system to stop this.

  1. Good Morning Alicia,
It is good to know that you understand the pollution problem.
I think one way that we can help with solving the pollution problem at our school is to start a worm farm.
I know this is not the same as fixing the Selwyn or Mawhera River problem but it would help us be thoughtful about our environment.
    What do you think?

  2. Hi Alicia

You have come up with some great facts about these two rivers. I think that the farmers are all finally starting to do their bit to help with the pollution form their stock. This is really good. They are planting trees and fencing off water ways which is good.
Here is Greymouth they have built the sewage treatment plant to help with the problem. The raw sewage no longer goes into the river by it is treated. This has got to make a huge difference.
It would be good if we had a nice clean river one day.

    Great work Alicia

    Until next time

    Allie :)
