The Colossale Squid maths prodlem

                                              The Colossale Squid maths problem

If I had a to move a Colossale Squid with adults and kids I would use 16 adults and 7 kids. I worked this out by 4 adults could 100kg (4x25=100) If I had 16 adults they could take 400kg. That leaves 100kg for the kids. 6x15=90 so there is one kid that has to take 10kg. It would take 16 adults and 7 kids to move the Colossale Squid.

  1. Well that is interesting that it would involve so many people. What would you do about the height difference between the adults and the kids when they are carrying the colossal squid? Wouldn't it be easier to use a crane? How did teh colossal squid that was / is at Te Papa get moved there?

  2. Hi Alicia!

Awesome work with this math problem! You have explained your working very clearly - I also like that one kid gets a little bit of a break and only has to lift 10kg's instead of 15kg's, very kind of you. :)

Do you think there is a way you could solve the problem where you could have the perfect amount of people for lifting the 500kg squid? Maybe less adults and more children?

I have seen the colossal squid in Te Papa and it is pretty huge - I would not be surprised if it took this many people to move it! Have you seen it before? ...it's pretty cool!
Do you think you would have liked to be on the team moving the squid?... might have been a messy job!

I was just told about a strong man this morning called Eddie Hall - He won the World's Strongest Man 2017 and he can lift 500kg's all by himself... maybe Te Papa should have hired him to move the squid!!

    Great work Alicia! :)

    Nga mihi,
    Ellee :)
